How to Fix Broken Tiles

1. Bring your Dad.
2. Make A Video of Him Doing it.
3. Buy some soda.

My place got messed up yesterday. So we clean some floorings and broken tiles.

So here's some Tips for fixing broken tiles and floorings.

1. GEARING UP
The hardest part of tile repair is finding a replacement tile that matches. First, check your basement, garage or storage shed - the tile setter might have left a few extra tiles behind when the floor was laid. If you don't find any, check with local tile dealers for a match.

But if the floor is old, finding a matching tile could be impossible. Manufacturers often discontinue old patterns and colors as new ones are introduced. Unless you're willing to live with the damage, choose a replacement that comes close.

Matching the new grout to what's already there is also important - the wrong color will make the repair conspicuous, even if the tile is dead-on. Go to a well-stocked tile outlet or floor-covering dealer and ask to see the colored grouts (about $7 for a 10-lb. bag). Take home a sample chip that shows the different colors, compare it to the existing grout and pick the matching color.

2. REMOVING THE OLD TILE
You want to remove the cracked tile without damaging any others. Work carefully, be patient and, above all else, do not pry against surrounding tiles. You might want to lay cardboard around the cracked tile for added protection.
First, use an electric drill fitted with a 1/4-in.-dia. masonry bit to bore a series of holes diagonally across the cracked tile (photo 1). Space the holes no more than 1 in. apart.

Next, wearing safety glasses and work gloves, split the tile along the holes using a 1/2- or 3/4-in.-wide cold chisel and ball-peen hammer (photo 2). Don't pound too hard on the chisel or you'll crack neighboring grout joints. Make several light taps until tile fragments pop loose. Remove loose pieces and pry up any remaining shards with a flat bar (photo 3). Then use the bar or cold chisel to carefully remove any surrounding grout remnants.

After clearing away the damaged tile, take a stiff-bladed scraper or toothed chisel and scrape the old mortar from the subfloor. Don't worry about removing every last bit - just smooth the surface. Then vacuum up all loose dust and debris.

3. Setting the New Tile
You can set the replacement tile with either an adhesive ($5 per quart) or latex-fortified thinset mortar ($8 for a 50-lb. sack). Both products are applied with a notched trowel and work well for all types of tile. We used thinset. Why? Because we happened to have some on hand. Dump about two cups of thinset into a bucket and stir in about 1/3 cup of water for each 8-in. tile you're replacing. Mix to a smooth consistency, adding more water if necessary. Let the thinset stand, or slake, for about 10 minutes so all the water is absorbed.

Spread a 1/4-in.-thick bed of mortar onto the subfloor with a 3-in.-wide drywall knife; be sure the entire area is covered. Next, rake out the mortar with a 1/4-in. notched trowel (photo 4). Set the new tile into the fresh mortar, center it in the space and tamp it down using a wood block and a hammer handle (photo 5). Be sure the tile is still centered, then let the mortar cure overnight.

Mix powdered grout with water in a small container. Its strength and color are affected by too much or too little water, so follow package directions closely. Again, let the mixture stand a few minutes for full water absorption. Then stir the grout one more time and force it into the joints with a rubber float (photo 6); a large, dense sponge also works.

Sweep the rubber float or sponge over each joint diagonally several times until the gaps are filled and level with the surrounding joints. Skim over the surface a final time to scrape up any excess grout. Let the grout cure until a hazy film dries on the surface of the tile. Lightly wipe the surface with a damp towel to remove this film (photo 7).

After waiting a few hours, thoroughly buff the entire area you worked on with a clean, dry towel. You should avoid walking on the new tile for at least another 24 hours.

SONA - State of The Nation Address - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo

SONA - State of The Nation Address

The past year saw the country on a steady and sure growth, notwithstanding the internal political turmoil, the global oil crisis and rising prices of commodities that has threatened to disrupt and undermine the economic gains that have already been made. Through it all, the President demonstrated to the nation and the world that she is undeterred by destructive politics, remaining resolutely focused on the economy, investments and jobs, and in pursuing her vision for the Philippines – a modern country founded on social justice and enjoying economic prosperity.

We achieved record revenue collections which further strengthened our fiscal position and renewed the confidence of investors in our economy. We created the jobs that fueled the growth of the economy. With the improved fiscal condition, more funds are being provided to pump-prime the economy. This is expected to further reduce the poverty incidence among Filipino families, which already saw a decrease of almost three percentage points from the 27.5% revised estimate for 2000 down to 24.7% in 2003.

Near Field Communication - The Cell Phone Wallet

Popsci: Cell Phone Wallet

An NFC chip in your phone will send your credit-card number -- stored on your phone or on the chip -- by way of short-distance radio waves.

An electronic reader at the checkout will decode the number and ring up your purchase. Unlike radio-frequency identification (RFID) and other existing contactless payment systems, NFC chips allow two-way information exchange by rolling an RF transmitter and reader into one five-millimeter package.

That means the chip can also take in data, such as a receipt zapped to it by a cash register or a bus schedule from a tag embedded in a bus-stop sign.

You don't even have to buy a new phone. When it hits stores next spring, the miniSD-card-size adapter from SanDisk can add NFC to any smartphone with a Symbian operating system when it hits stores next spring.

The first pay-by-phone option should roll out later this year, with more applications to follow.

Since Near Field Communication uses the same radio frequency as current touch-free payment cards, such as Speedpass, your phone will work with existing readers. But it has an extra advantage: You can lock your handset with a password, so if it's lost, no one else can use it.

Your phone can store your commuter pass and radio it to an entrance turnstile. Bus-riders in Hanau, Germany, are already swiping their way on board in the first commercial application of NFC. Next up: movie, concert and plane tickets.

Any object with an NFC tag can send information to another. For example: A tagged DVD box at the store can send your phone a movie trailer. And in a current trial in Atlanta, users wave their phones in front of a poster to receive game stats and videos of their favorite Hawks players.

Tips on how to make online business successful: Get Dumb! Get Rich!

Top 10 Dumbest Online Business Ideas That Made It Big Time.

1. Million Dollar Homepage
1000000 pixels, charge a dollar per pixel – that’s perhaps the dumbest idea for online business anyone could have possible come up with. Still, Alex Tew, a 21-year-old who came up with the idea, is now a millionaire.

2. SantaMail
Ok, how’s that for a brilliant idea. Get a postal address at North Pole, Alaska, pretend you are Santa Claus and charge parents 10 bucks for every letter you send to their kids? Well, Byron Reese sent over 200000 letters since the start of the business in 2001, which makes him a couple million dollars richer.

3. Doggles
Create goggles for dogs and sell them online? Boy, this IS the dumbest idea for a business. How in the world did they manage to become millionaires and have shops all over the world with that one? Beyond me.

4. LaserMonks
LaserMonks.com is a for-profit subsidiary of the Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Spring Bank, an eight-monk monastery in the hills of Monroe County, 90 miles northwest of Madison. Yeah, real monks refilling your cartridges. Hallelujah! Their 2005 sales were $2.5 million! Praise the Lord.

5. AntennaBalls
You can’t sell antenna ball online. There is no way. And surely it wouldn’t make you rich. But this is exactly what Jason Wall did, and now he is now a millionaire.

6. FitDeck
Create a deck of cards featuring exercise routines, and sell it online for $18.95. Sounds like a disaster idea to me. But former Navy SEAL and fitness instructor Phil Black reported last year sales of $4.7 million. Surely beats what military pays.

7. PositivesDating.Com
How would you like to go on a date with an HIV positive person? Paul Graves and Brandon Koechlin thought that someone would, so they created a dating site for HIV positive folks last year. Projected 2006 sales are $110,000, and the two hope to have 50,000 members by their two-year mark.

8. Designer Diaper Bags
Christie Rein was tired of carrying diapers around in a freezer bag. The 34-year-old mother of three found herself constantly stuffing diapers for her infant son into freezer bags to keep them from getting scrunched up in her purse. Rein wanted something that was compact, sleek and stylish, so in November 2004, she sat down with her husband, Marcus, who helped her design a custom diaper bag that's big enough to hold a travel pack of wipes and two to four diapers. With more than $180,000 in sales for 2005, Christie's company, Diapees & Wipees, has bags in 22 different styles, available online and in 120 boutiques across the globe for $14.99.

9. TruGamerz
Faux-suede padded covers for game controllers and gel thumb pads for analog joysticks? No one will buy that. Forget it. The product proved to be so popular, it got picked up by Target.com and Walmart.com and annual sales new exceed half a million dollars.

10. Lucky Wishbone Co.
Fake wishbones. Now, this stupid idea is just destined to flop. Who in the world needs FAKE PLASTIC wishbones? A lot of people, it turns out. Now producing 30,000 wishbones daily (they retail for 3 bucks a pop) Ken Ahroni, the company founder, expects 2006 sales to reach $1 million.

Video Game Ads by Google

Google has expanded to image ads, video ads, and print ads, and has frequently been rumored to be entering radio and television. While many think that television ads (ala Spot Runner) could be Google's next major move, they may be neglecting a potentially largër opportuníty: in-game video game advertising.

The Entertainment Software Association put U.S. salës of video game hardware and software at $7.3 billion back in 2004, a figure that rivals Hollywood box office revenue. In-game video game advertising is nothing new for the booming game industry – large companies have been buying static advertisements in games for years. What is new is the expansion of online gaming into the mainstream. Once reserved for only PC Gamers, console gamers have now discovered a whole new world of competition over a broadband connection.

In a recent interview with TechNewsWorld, EA's John Schappert, who oversees the largest interactive game studio in the world, was asked about in-game advertising: "In-game ad integration is a growing business where we see both advertisers and consumers looking for more. It's an additional revenue stream that is still small, but growing.

There's no doubt that with the best programmers in the world Google is capable of developing and improving upon the technology that Massive has. It's also not hard to imagine advertisers paying per thousand impressions (PPM) for their text or image ads to be shown in specific games, much like they do now for specific sites. The tough part for Google, however, would be the distribution of those ads.

As opposed to signing up websites to display their ads by copying some code on to their site, Google would have to work with game programmers throughout the development process. This would be much more time consuming and would be a much largër risk for Google. In the same way that Massive signed the contract with 2K, Google would have to sign large contracts with game developers and work with them for several months to integrate their ads.

This enforces the fact that the main difference between what happened with DoubleClick and what could happen with video games is that it would probably be more work for Google to distribute their ads over multiple channels (i.e. more games). Since each game is programmed differently, there is no game equivalent to the JavaScrípt used in all AdSense ads. Every game would need to be tailored to Google's ad network individually. Difficult: yes. Impossible for Google!

Beware Kazaa Users

KAZAA P2P

Kazaa Media Desktop (once capitalized as "KaZaA", but now usually left as "Kazaa") is a controversial peer-to-peer file sharing application using the FastTrack protocol.

Kazaa is commonly used to exchange MP3 music files over the Internet. It is also increasingly used to exchange movie files. The official Kazaa client can be downloaded free of charge and is financed by attached adware and Spyware (despite the "No Spyware" message displayed on Kazaa's website). Over the past years, Kazaa's parent was the target of many copyright-related lawsuits.

Kazaa and FastTrack were created by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (also known as the inventors of Skype) and introduced by their Dutch company Consumer Empowerment in March 2001, near the end of the first generation of P2P networks. Napster shut down that July.

Initially, most users of Kazaa were users of the Morpheus program, formerly a client of MusicCity. But once the official Kazaa client became more widespread, its developers used their ability to automatically update it, changing the protocol in February 2002, to shut out Morpheus clients when its developers failed to pay license fees. Morpheus later became a client of the Gnutella network.

Stop PiracyThe company that distributed software called "Kazaa," which made it simple for millions of computer users to download music and movies over the Internet, has settled global $115M lawsuits brought by the entertainment industry, the industry said Thursday.

Info about our Place.

Lucena was first as "Buenavista" which means beautiful scenic spots. Later, the name "Buenavista" was changed to Oroquieta" in honor of the Spanish Governor-general Oroquieta. Then the place was called "Cotta" meaning strong port. Pursuant to an "Orden Real Super Civil" promulgated on November 5, 1879 the name Lucena was given to the community as tribute to the late Reverend Mariano Granja, a Jesuit prelate of the town of Lucena, Province of Andalucia, Spain. Before Lucena became a municipality on June 23,1880, it was a barrio of the town of Tayabas, then the capital of the Province of the Tayabas (now Quezon Province).

When the civil government was established in the Province of Tayabas on March 12,1901, Lucena was made the capital of the province.

During WWII Lucena experience some grim realities of war in the hands of the Japanese military forces. Fortunately, the city was not devastated by the war.

By virtue of Republic Act No. 3271 Lucena became a chartered city. Congressman Manuel S. Enverga of the first district of Quezon and Congressman Pascual Espinosa sponsored the bill creating the City of Lucena. It passed both houses of Congress on march 7, 1961.

The city of Lucena was inagurated on August 19, 1962 on the occasion of the 84th Birth Anniversary of the late president Manuel L. Quezon

Natural population growth and the tendency of the people to migrate in this place contributed to the event increasing population of the city. Today Lucena with approximately 166,946 people flourishes as a fast developing urban community.

Philippines 101 : The 7107 Islands

The Philippines. The History 101

From a long history of Western colonial rule, interspersed with the visits of merchants and traders, the 7,107 islands of Philippines today has evolved as a unique blend of the east and the west, both in appearance and culture. Today regarded as the third largest English speaking country in the world, the country has a rich history combining Asian, European, and American influences.

Boracay Aklan PhilippinesThe Filipinos had a rich culture and were trading with the Chinese and the Japanese before the landmark event, Spanish colonization in 1521 altered the destiny of the island country. The Spanish colonization being a strong denominator in the history of Philippines, it brought about the construction of Intramuros, a "Walled City" comprised of European buildings and churches, replicated in different parts of the archipelago. A series of political rebellions then continued for as long as 350 years, at the end of which in 1898, the Filipinos succeeded in winning their independence. It is worth mentioning over here that this independence of the nation was fuelled by leaders like Jose Rizal and Emilio Aguinaldo.

Club Noah Palawan Philippines1898 became a landmark year in the history of Philippines as in this year; Philippines became the first and only colony of the United States. However, The U.S. refused to recognize any Philippine right to self-government. As a result, Aguinaldo declared war against the United States for denying them independence on February 4, 1899. Following the Philippine-American War, the United States brought widespread education to the islands. Filipinos fought alongside Americans during World War II, particularly at the famous battle of Bataan and Corregidor which delayed Japanese advance and saved Australia. They then waged a guerilla war against the Japanese from 1941 to 1945. However, the country was able to regain its independence in 1946. In this way, the freedom-loving Filipinos have waged two peaceful, bloodless revolutions against what were perceived as corrupt regimes, resulting in the vibrant democracy of today’s Philippines. Today, there are as many as 12 English national newspapers, 7 national television stations, hundreds of cable TV stations, and 2,000 radio stations in Philippines, which ensures that democracy is restored to the country.

"High tide or low tide?" was the reply given by Charlene Gonzales to a question asked at the finals of the Miss Universe pageant held in Manila in 1994. It's not clear whether the host realized that Gonzales was joking, so she then had to say that there are 7,107 islands at high tide, and 7,108 at low tide, which was not necessarily correct. Porn makes Philippines, not India, the choice for video outsourcing

an article from CNET saying:

May 30, 2006 12:58 PM PDT

Video web sites, like everyone else these days, are looking for places to offshore some business functions. For DaveTV, a start-up founded by Rex Wong, it's the Philippines. The company, which hopes to mix contest in with the usual fare submitted by users, has hired people in that nation to watch videos so they can be categorized and, if necessary, screened out.
Why the Philippines? "Porn is illegal in India," he said. Thus, outsourcing there could lead to inadvertent legal problems.

DaveTV is also looking at ways to insert ads into video and allow individuals to more easily publish videos. Wong founded Applied Semantics which Google bought for over $100 million in 2003. The technology is now a crucial part of AdSense.

Philippine Idol Heat up!

Philippine Idol

PHILIPPINE IDOL may be the local franchise of the world-famous American Idol but its three resident judges – Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, Asia’s Queen of Song Pilita Corrales and Master Rapper Francis M. – are definitely no copycats of AI’s Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson. And they don’t intend to be.

For one thing, we all know Cayabyab’s experience in the music business. He has worked with the best singers in the land and on the sole basis of his extensive experience, he definitely would know what he is looking for in a Philippine Idol.

Corrales, too, has had a long, stellar career. She is considered as the original Philippine diva and has countless hits and gold record albums. As such, she knows how it is to be a real singer and this musical wisdom, so to speak, will help her ferret out the good singers from the bad.

Francis M, on the other hand, may be relatively less experienced than the other two judges, but he surely has his share of musical successes – what with rap-rock hits like “Mga Kababayan Ko” and “Kaleidoscope World.” Francis M brings a younger and more contemporary perspective to the judging process.

The three judges’ respective musical experiences virtually assure participants that they know what they want and will not pattern their judging styles after their American Idol counterparts...Read more

Kamay ni Hesus Lucban Quezon

The Prayer Mountain Located in Lucban Quezon, also known as "Kamay Ni Hesus" Thousands of devotees visit this place for healing and site seeing. This 250+ steps grotto is a must to visit place in the Philippines. This was also the landmark of "Pahiyas Festival".

The colorful Pahiyas festival that we have known for years dated as far back in the 16th century when Catholicism is on the rise in Quezon province. As many have told, it started as a way of thanksgiving for a good harvest. And the bountiful offers were given to the Franciscan missionaries who brought Catholicism in the 1500s. Since then, it already begun as a tradition among the Lucbanins until 1595 when the construction of the wooden church paved the way for the locals to bring their harvest to the church. It was believed that this rite must be done by the farmers in order to avoid bad luck, drought and famine. But this is actually done to celebrate the feast of San Isidro, patron saint of farmers. Guess What?

William H. Gates was born on Oct. 28, 1955. He was raised in Seattle, Washington where his father, William H. Gates II practices as an attorney. His mother,Mary Gates was a former school teacher. Bill Gates demonstrated an interest in computers and softwareat an early age. He entered Harvard University in 1973 where he first metSteve Balmer, the current CEO of Microsoft. In 1975, he began Microsoft with his childhood buddy Paul Allen. Bill Gates decided to leave harvard in order to focus more attention on Microsoft. The rest as they say is history.

Today he is worth a staggering $52.8 billion . To put this inperspective, consider what can be done with that amount of money.

He could pay the salary of President George W. Bush (US$400,000) for 132,000 years
You could win Survivor 52,000 times and still not match up to his fortune
His wealth exceeds the annual budget of Russia.

Manny Pacquiao The People's Champ

Manny Pacquiao won over Oscar Larios MANO A MANO championship at the Araneta Astrodome at Cubao Quezon City, Philippines.

Pacquiao started sluggish during the 1st round and begun aggression on the 2nd round, but Oscar Larios was not an easy opponent He fought wildly on the 3rd Round and staggered Pacquiao, at round 4 and 5 pacquiao and larios was hitting hard pound by pound, or let's just say Kilos by Kilos. Oscar Larios cut on the left side of His brows open wide and a swollen bruise just below the eye made him suffer with every punch he took from Manny Pacquiao. On Round 9 Larios came to his knees but never losing his hope of winning He managed to survived and continue fighting up to the 11th round. At Final round, Manny Pacquiao gave Oscar Larios a straight combination and sending him to His knees for the 2nd Time. Manny Pacquiao won with unanimous decision. I'm so proud of Manny Pacquiao. Good Job Pacman! Although it's not the best PACMAN show yet, this fight is another a great victory not just for pacquiao but for all the Filipinos around the Globe.

CBCP and Politics in the Philippines

Spanish regime? or let's just say catholic's regime. From the time the Philippines was still occupied by the Spaniards, catholic bishops always intervene between government and politics. Were they really needed?

---

OPPOSITION lawmakers yesterday conceded that the refusal of the bishops to support their impeachment campaign was a blow to their efforts but said this did not mean that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was off the hook.

The President’s loyal supporters in Congress welcomed the statement of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), saying it knocked the moral basis out of the opposition bid to oust Ms Arroyo.

“It cannot be denied that their decision not to support us is a loss for now but this will not delay or lessen the determination of those pushing for impeachment,” House Minority Leader Francis Escudero said in Filipino.

Bukidnon Representative Teofisto Guingona III said the CBCP’s refusal to support the impeachment process “does not spell absolution for GMA (President Arroyo).”

“There is no escape for her. The truth will come out by all means. And she will be held accountable to the people,” said Guingona, whose father, former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr., was among those who filed an impeachment complaint against Ms Arroyo.

Only peaceful process

Parañaque Representative Roilo Golez said the motive of impeachment proponents “cannot be ascribed to power.”

He said those seeking Ms Arroyo’s removal saw the impeachment process as necessary in the quest for the truth.

“The courts are not the correct venue for truth-seeking because an incumbent President cannot be taken to court.”

Deputy House Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano said the CBCP’s stand to continue the search for the truth but not through the current impeachment effort was “understandable” as people were frustrated with the political process.

“But what is the alternative? We welcome any process which will bring out the truth but lacking that process, impeachment is the only constitutional, legal and peaceful process,” said Cayetano.

The party-list group Bayan Muna said the “CBCP turned its back on the people” because its pastoral statement was “a virtual exoneration and endorsement of this sham presidency.”

2nd Impeach of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. What? Not Again.

GLORIA MACAPAGAL ARROYO 2nd IMPEACHMENT ?

Civil society and leftist groups filed Monday a new impeachment complaint against President Arroyo at the House of Representatives, ABS-CBN News learned.
The group “Citizens Impeachment Case versus Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo” led by Zenaida Quezon-Avanceña filed the 25-page complaint at the office of House Secretary General Roberto Nazareno at 8:09 a.m.

House Minority Leader Francis Escudero and San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora endorsed the complaint. Several opposition goups and leaders also witnessed the filing of the new impeachment bid.

At least 300 members of the group went on a vigil at the Batasan Complex in Quezon City since 6 p.m. Sunday to prepare for the filing. [ABS-CBN News]

New charges against Arroyo include condoning political killings and violating the constitution to muzzle dissent, complainants said. They include scholars, former Cabinet members, political opponents and left-wing activists.
The complainants also include relatives of several left-wing activists killed since Arroyo took power in 2001. [Malaysian Star]

ABS-CBN new program BANDILA

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. hopes to change the face of Philippine television by moving its late night news program Insider to an earlier time slot. What’s more, the new program will be titled Bandila, which is the Filipino word for flag.

The move “is an act of leadership,” said Maria Ressa, head of the network’s news and current affairs division, explaining the choice for the title at a press conference on Tuesday. Her message: Nationalism, not merely ratings, will drive the news.

When Ressa took over the helm of the news division in June 2005, she noticed—not just in ABS-CBN—that programming in recent the years had become entertainment-driven. Particularly by consecutive soap operas—comprised of local and foreign telenovelas, fantaseryes and reality shows—which are shown from 7:30 p.m. onwards. The effect on the delivery of news is that it is pushed very late into the evening.

“We’re taking a risk here by moving the news to 10:30 p.m.,” she pointed out, so that viewers don’t have to stay awake wait until midnight to get their information.

The move not only aims to bring the news earlier to viewers, but also to polish the network’s image specifically, and that of media on the whole.

“Media has been getting a lot of negative publicity lately,” said Luchi Cruz Valdez, who has been tasked to head Bandila’s program production, adding that many viewers had begun to turn away from watching the news because most items focus on political bickerings, economic slump and national degradation. “We were feeding on that depression. We felt the time was right to do something,” she elaborated.

The Philippine Economy

Since the end of the World War II, the Philippine economy has had a mixed history of growth and development. Over the years, the Philippines has gone from being one of the richest countries in Asia (following Japan) to being one of the poorest. Growth immediately after the war was rapid, but slowed over time. A severe recession in 1984-85 saw the economy shrink by more than 10%, and perceptions of political instability during the Aquino administration further dampened economic activity. During his administration, President Ramos introduced a broad range of economic reforms and initiatives designed to spur business growth and foreign investment. As a result, the Philippines saw a period of rapid sustained growth, but the Asian financial crisis triggered in 1997 slowed economic development in the Philippines once again. In 1998, the Philippine economy deteriorated as a result of spill-over from the Asian financial crisis and poor weather conditions. Growth fell to about -0.5% in 1998 from 5% in 1997, but recovered to 2.9% by 1999. President Estrada tried to resist protectionist measures; and efforts to continue the reforms begun by the Ramos administration made significant progress. A major bank failure in April 2000 and the impeachment and subsequent departure of President Estrada in the beginning of 2001 led to lower growth. The current administration under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is pushing towards faster and more rapid economic growth. In 2004, the Philippine economy grew by 6.1%, a pleasant surprise, beating most analysts and even the government's estimates. In 2005, the Philippine Peso posted an appreciation rate of 6%--the fastest in the Asian region for that year. However, the advent of high oil prices dampened the government's growth estimates for that same year as growth only amounted to 5.1%. As of the First Quarter of 2006, the Philippines posted a growth of 5.5%, making possible the government's goal of achieving its full year target growth.

This is a chart of trend of gross domestic product of Philippines at market prices estimated by the International Monetary Fund with figures in millions of Philippine Pesos.

Year Gross Domestic Product US Dollar Exchange
1980 243,749 7.51 Pesos
1985 571,883 18.60 Pesos
1990 1,074,510 24.32 Pesos
1995 1,905,951 25.23 Pesos
2000 3,354,727 44.19 Pesos
2005 5,379,251 55.08 Pesos

Industrial production is centered on processing and assembly operations of the following: food, beverages, tobacco, rubber products, textiles, clothing and footwear, pharmaceuticals, paints, plywood and veneer, paper and paper products, small appliances, and electronics. Heavier industries are dominated by the production of cement, glass, industrial chemicals, fertilizers, iron and steel, and refined petroleum products.

The industrial sector is concentrated in the urban areas, especially in the metropolitan Manila region and has only weak linkages to the rural economy. Inadequate infrastructure, transportation and communication have so far inhibited faster industrial growth, although great strides have been made in addressing the last of these elements.

The country is well-endowed with mineral and thermal energy resources. It produces 1931 MW of electricity from geothermal sources, second only to the United States[1] and a recent discovery of natural gas reserves in the Malampaya Fields off the island of Palawan is already being used to generate electricity in three gas-powered plants. Philippine gold, nickel, copper and chromite deposits are among the largest in the world. Other important minerals include silver, coal, gypsum, and sulfur. Significant deposits of clay, limestone, marble, silica, and phosphate exist. About 60% of total mining production are accounted for by non-metallic minerals, which contributed substantially to the industry's steady output growth between 1993 and 1998, with the value of production growing 58%. In 1999, however, mineral production declines 16% to $793 million. Mineral exports have generally slowed since 1996. Led by copper cathodes, Philippine mineral exports amounted to $650 million in 2000, barely up from 1999 levels. Low metal prices, high production costs, lack of investment in infrastructure, and a challenge to the new mining law have contributed to the mining industry's overall decline.

The industry went on a rebound starting in late 2004 when the Supreme Court deemed an important law permitting 100% foreign ownership of Philippine mining companies constitutional.
